Under the quiet canopy of a late summer night, one independent maker set out to solve two of amateur astronomy’s toughest challenges at once: building an affordable physical dome and capturing the entire night sky without digital shortcuts.
Armed with an array of 3D printers and a passion for deep sky imaging, the builder created BASTION—a custom 60-segment printed observatory shell designed to house specialized astronomical gear. Using a specialized dual-lens 360 camera, the builder captured roughly 400 uncompressed RAW images from dusk until dawn. Each frame clocked in at a staggering 120 megabytes, shot at 25-second exposures under ISO 1600. The result was a breathtaking, continuous record of meteors slicing through the summer constellations above the futuristic shell.
Yet, bringing the dynamic sky to life presented a digital nightmare. Standard panorama and astrophotography software frequently struggle to stitch high-contrast night sky images seamlessly. The artificial intelligence algorithms built into modern editing applications often distort faint star fields or create harsh, ugly seam lines where the camera’s two lenses meet.
Rather than letting automated AI tools stitch the sequence—and risk erasing delicate meteor streaks in the process—the creator chose an uncompromising path. They began hand-building a custom Photoshop action script to manually edit and stitch all 400 massive RAW files without a single drop of AI intervention.
