It takes a serious commitment to keep a secret for three weeks, let alone three full years. But that is precisely what happened inside a long-running fantasy roleplay campaign that has the internet locked in a fierce debate over tabletop ethics.

For 142 weekly sessions, a group of five close friends gathered around a kitchen table to play out an epic storyline. At the center of their team was a shining paladin, played by a veteran gamer who positioned his character as the ultimate selfless protector. He tanked incoming damage, healed wounded allies, and spent his gold building in-game orphanages. He was, by all accounts, the heart of the team.

Then came the final boss battle.

With the campaign's ultimate villain down to critical health, the party prepared for their triumphant victory. That is when the paladin made his move. Instead of striking the monster, he turned to the party’s low-health healer and executed a devastating surprise attack, knocking her out instantly.

It turns out the player and the game leader had been orchestrating a secret plot since the fourth session of the campaign. Every perception check, every divine vision, and every private text message sent under the table was part of a multi-year master plan to betray the party at the worst possible moment.

The real-world fallout was immediate. Shouting erupted across the table. Character sheets were torn up. Two players packed their dice and walked out of the house, refusing to speak to the player or the game master ever since.

Once the story hit public forums, opinions exploded into two passionate camps.

One commenter called the move a work of sheer genius, arguing that true dramatic tension requires actual risks and that a three-year burn makes for an unforgettable legendary tale.

Another argued that the move was entirely toxic, pointing out that the game leader ceased acting as a neutral judge and spent three years plotting against eighty percent of his own players without their consent.

A third observer noted that while dramatic twists are great on television, spending hundreds of hours of your real life being set up as a punchline by your friends feels terrible.

Did this game master and player craft an all-time storytelling masterpiece, or did they completely destroy table etiquette for a cheap thrill?

On this episode of Off Script, the hosts tear apart the ethics of the ultimate tabletop betrayal and debate whether long-term gaming secrets ever truly pay off.
