The floor at D23 in Anaheim erupted into total hysteria when Marvel Studios finally pulled back the curtain on its most closely guarded secret: the brand-new cast of the X-Men reboot.

Director Jake Schreier took the stage to introduce a star-studded lineup that promises to fundamentally reshape the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Taking on the iconic roles are Sadie Sink as Jean Grey, Kit Connor as Cyclops, Maya Boyd as Storm, Samara Weaving as Emma Frost, Inde Navarrette as Rogue, and Christopher Abbott stepping into the iconic wheelchair as Professor Charles Xavier.

The internet immediately caught fire over the announcements, particularly surrounding the creative pivot away from traditional franchise anchors like Wolverine and Magneto. Reports out of the convention center suggest the new film will instead zero in on the legendary rivalry between Kit Connor’s Cyclops and the villainous Mister Sinister, with rumors swirling that Adam Driver is being circled for the villainous role.

Reaction to the casting choices was fast and fierce. Fans instantly fell in love with the stunning female leads, with many declaring Maya Boyd’s casting as Storm an absolute stroke of genius. One commenter praised Samara Weaving’s elevated scream-queen reputation as perfect for the icy elegance of Emma Frost, while another celebrated breakthrough star Inde Navarrette’s leap from Obsession into multi-picture blockbuster territory.

However, not everyone is fully convinced by the new team. A vocal faction of fans expressed immediate skepticism over Christopher Abbott taking over Professor X. One observer admitted they simply do not get the Abbott pick and need to see him in full uniform before buying in, while another declared firmly that they remain on Team James McAvoy for the telepathic leader.

Yet despite the character debates, the theatrical environment could not be more primed for a mutant revival. Sony’s Spider-Man: Brand New Day continues its historic theatrical campaign, pulling in an estimated $11.30 million on a single Thursday to bring its jaw-dropping domestic total to $715.88 million.

That astronomical box office performance proves that audience appetite for top-tier superhero events remains at an all-time high as Schreier’s ensemble prepares to enter the fray.

Our hosts dive straight into the casting controversy and box office numbers on this week's episode of Call Sheet.
