Michael Gagne didn’t set out to make another blockbuster. He set out to make something only he could make.

For 14 years, the veteran animator — whose credits include An American Tail, The Land Before Time, and Ratatouille — has worked alone, frame by frame, on a fully hand-drawn animated feature slated for a 2027 release.

“I started drawing the moment I could hold a crayon,” Gagne once said.

Now, with a trailer finally revealed, fans are divided.

Some praise his dedication. Others call the visuals underwhelming.

One viewer wrote, “Fourteen years of doing this basically solo is an absurd level of dedication.”

Another added, “Hand-drawn animation has so much character — you can instantly tell when someone poured their entire soul into it.”

But criticism followed swiftly.

“The direction seems rather lacklustre,” one commenter noted. “So many shots just look like a side-scrolling video game.”

Another admitted, “It’s the little details that make this not work for me — static field of grass, lack of fur movement.”

Still, supporters argue the trailer is just a glimpse.

“It’s a trailer,” someone replied. “At least wait ’til the film comes out before making comments about the lack of direction.”

As debate swirls online, Gagne continues drawing — one frame at a time.
