The glamour of Hollywood has always masked a volatile reality, but the last few years have tested even the most seasoned industry veterans. From the devastating impact of the pandemic to the seismic shifts of the streaming wars, followed by historic writers' and actors' strikes, the entertainment world has been on a rollercoaster ride.

Now, a critical question looms: Is the film industry finally back on solid ground, or is this just another temporary high?

For many, the narrative has been one of gloom. The pandemic sent box office numbers plummeting, pushing audiences towards home viewing. Then came the strikes, halting productions and leaving countless crew members and creatives without work. Interest rates soared, and the much-hyped streaming bubble began to deflate, leading to widespread layoffs and project cancellations.

Yet, a glimmer of hope has emerged. Recent box office successes and a renewed interest in original features, even leading to rare spec script sales, suggest a potential turnaround. But is this a true recovery, or merely a mirage?

Insiders offer a divided perspective. Some are experiencing a genuine resurgence. A Setdresser/Props and SPFX professional in New York confidently states, "I have not stopped working for the entire year on a handful of different features, shows, and commercials. It’s pre-Covid busy again for the time being." This sentiment is echoed by reports from Vancouver and Western Canada, where production is picking up, bolstered by significant government investments.

One person commented, "Post Covid was actually booming work wise. They were making everything. The strikes are really what killed us," implying that the underlying demand for content remains strong, and with labor disputes resolved, the engines of production are firing up once more.

However, this optimism isn't universal. In places like Austin, the reality remains stark. "There is still no consistent work, and very few gigs that are paid, despite the constant promises that 'we're building two new world class studios, money's gonna come in and the ball's gonna get rolling again soon!' This has been the case for *a while now*," an individual shared, painting a picture of persistent struggle.

An Assistant Production Coordinator in Atlanta, while managing to land one union gig a year, admitted, "Wouldn’t want to own a soundstage right now," suggesting a cautious outlook on long-term stability. For screenwriters, the landscape is particularly bleak. "All the work has dried up. AI hasn't helped matters. Not much out there," lamented one creative, highlighting how technological advancements are adding new layers of challenge.

Another industry observer pointed to a deeper issue, arguing that even after strike victories, studios are finding "other ways to fuck you," implying that systemic problems and exploitative practices persist despite the perceived recovery.

While some regions with strong tax incentives, like Texas, are seeing more activity, the overall picture is far from uniformly rosy. The question remains whether the current uptick is sustainable and if all sectors of the industry will benefit equally, or if Hollywood is simply trading one set of problems for another.

Is the industry truly on the rebound, or is this a fragile recovery built on shaky ground? Our hosts dig into this very question on the podcast.
