Historical numbers present a stark picture across all nine instances of the 2,000-yard club. O.J. Simpson followed his 1973 benchmark of 2,003 yards with 1,125 yards in 1974. In the most extreme case, Terrell Davis posted 2,008 yards for Denver in 1998 before severe injuries limited him to just 211 yards across four games in 1999, forever altering his career trajectory.

Analytics enthusiasts argue that this historical regression is simple biology. One observer noted that expecting back-to-back historic seasons ignores the physical reality of taking over 300 heavy hits in a single calendar year. From a roster management standpoint, treating a 2,000-yard season as a peak sell-high moment may be the ultimate defensive move against roster collapse.

However, traditionalists urge caution against relying purely on statistical warnings. Another analyst pointed out that even after significant drop-offs, elite backs like Sanders and Peterson still posted numbers that ranked among the best in the sport.
