Nobody objects to the four dollars. That is the first thing every account of this agrees on.

What detonates it is a single line buried at the bottom: supporters get early access to the trade board.

The trade board is the whole forum. It is where parts change hands, where a member who has been waiting three years for a discontinued component finally finds one. Early access is not a perk. It is a queue, and someone has just put a price on the front of it.

By page two, a member who has posted almost daily since 2014 writes the sentence that gets screenshotted everywhere: we thought we were a club and we just found out we are a customer base.

What gives the whole saga its shape is how completely unsurprising it is to anyone who has watched a small community come apart.

One longtime member laid out the pattern from the outside. Small groups fight hardest, they wrote, because everyone feels qualified to have an opinion. Nobody argues about the expensive complicated thing. Everybody argues about the shed.

Another pushed back on the idea that any of it is funny. For members who are retired, homebound or isolated, they wrote, this forum is not a hobby. It is the social calendar. Calling the stakes low is something only people with other options say.

A third offered the least emotional and possibly most accurate reading: none of this required villains. Unpaid moderators, no appeals process, no term limits, no public logs and an archive nobody can take with them will produce exactly this outcome with any group of humans, on any subject, every time.

The most quietly devastating comment in the thread came from someone who had joined three weeks earlier.

They said they still did not know which of the two forums to ask their beginner question in. They said they had decided not to ask it at all.
