The air is thin, cold, and unforgiving. I stand on the edge of the Thorong La Pass, my lungs burning as I gasp for oxygen. My goal was simple: complete the Annapurna Circuit fast and on a budget. But as I look back at the trail I’ve traversed, I wonder if I played it too safe or too risky.

The debate in the trekking community is fierce. Some say the Annapurna can be done in six days, with costs as low as $20 a night for food and lodging. Others warn that speed is the enemy of survival at high altitudes. I chose the middle path, using jeeps to skip the road walks and focusing on strategic acclimatization stops.

My journey began in Chame, where I took a jeep up from Besisahar. It saved me two days of tedious walking, but as one experienced trekker warned, the jeep doesn’t buy you acclimatization—it just moves the clock. I knew this, so I planned my nights carefully. Instead of staying two nights in Manang, as most itineraries suggest, I spent one night in Ngawal, which is actually higher in elevation. This, I hoped, would help my body adjust to the altitude more gradually.

The financial side was just as calculated. In the high villages, teahouses make their money on food, not lodging. I negotiated with the owners, agreeing to eat dinner and breakfast in exchange for a free room. It worked. I stuck to dal bhat, the local rice and lentil dish, which is cheap, filling, and nutritious. I avoided the touristy extras like yak meat and seabuckthorn juice, which can double the cost of a meal. In total, I averaged about $20 a night, a fraction of what I’d spend on the Everest Base Camp trek.

But the real test was the altitude. As I climbed higher, the air grew thinner, and the risk of altitude sickness increased. I had to slow down, taking extra rest breaks and monitoring my symptoms. One commenter argued that adaptation to the environment is crucial, and that making the trek fast creates a significant risk. I agreed. While I could move quickly up to 10,000 feet, I had to take my time above that, especially as I approached the pass.

The views, however, were worth every step. Ngawal offered some of the most breathtaking scenery I’ve ever seen, with the Annapurna range stretching out before me like a jagged wall of stone and ice. The highlight of the circuit, without a doubt.

In the end, I made it over the pass. I was tired, cold, and a little scared, but alive. The fast and cheap Annapurna trek is possible, but it’s not for the faint of heart. It requires careful planning, a good understanding of your body, and a willingness to listen to the mountain. If you’re considering it, my advice is this: respect the altitude, negotiate your stay, and eat well. The mountain will reward you, if you’re smart enough to let it.
